On January 23rd, 2017, six students from China and Japan started their first day of study in an American school.  Some of them have been to the US before, but for some of them, this is their first time traveling by themselves. We are all so impressed by how independent and how brave they are! Their unforgettable journey starts now…

“Today is the first day of school at the Rock Academy!  The school’s principal, Mrs. Cherry, and our teacher, Mrs. Putnam, introduced the school to us.  Each of us got a purple beanie!” – From camp student Yolanda Li.

The Lunar New Year is the biggest holiday and celebration in China, and it happened to be on January 27th when the students were in San Diego.  Although students were not able to celebrate with their native families, they got to share the New Year traditions with the school.  On Lunar New Year’s eve, students gathered and watched the Chinese New Year’s Gala show.

Our Japanese student Taiki wrote in his journal: “A week has passed since I came to San Diego.  It felt like a long week because I have learned a lot of things, especially the differences in culture and different ways of thinking.  I will cherish the rest of the week in San Diego, and do my best to make lots of memories!”

Besides experiencing studying in an American school, students also got to explore San Diego with us and with their host families.  During the two weekends they were here, we went to almost every attraction in San Diego: Downtown San Diego, USS Midway Museum, San Diego Zoo, Belmont Park, Balboa Park, and SeaWorld.  The students had many of their firsts with their host families, such as trying new food and mini golf!

Two weeks has gone by, and now it’s time to say our goodbyes.  This was a great group of students.  Although they came from different backgrounds and their personalities are all different, they have bonded with each other so well, and came together as a team beautifully.  We had a great time with this camp and hope to see them again in San Diego!
